Walking down West Main Street, the red brick building with the bakery sign in the window has yet to reveal the hidden treasures inside. With its large outdoor courtyard enclosed by ornate iron fencing to its bright, cheery inside complete with cathedral ceilings and its open dining area, More than Cake is more than meets the eye.
Owner Leshia Rainwater-Clark will open More Than Cake at 150 West Main Street to the public on September 9 during the Festival of the Horse. The bakery will offer fresh breads, pastries, cakes, pies, candies, soups and sandwiches with a limited dinner menu on Fridays and Saturdays. Initial operating hours are Tuesday-Thursday 6-6 and Friday/Saturday 6-10 or 11.
Clark has been baking professionally since 2011, but personally since she was a small child. After a 17 year career at Toyota in the paint shop, Clark decided to follow her passion acquiring degrees as a culinary and pastry chef and a business degree.
“I’ve always loved cooking. I can cook for 1 or 500. I love making barbecue and Cornish hen. I find bread making very relaxing and enjoy making No Bake Cheesecakes. We will be a bakery first and foremost, but people ask me ‘Do you just do cake?’ and I tell them ‘No, I do more than cake’. That’s where the name comes from,” said Clark.
Clark’s website, www.ineedcake.com will be up and running by the opening date with a menu available. People will be able to order online and Clark will eventually offer delivery downtown for lunch.
A resident of Georgetown for over 16 years, Clark is excited to be downtown. “Knowing that it’s my own spot. It’s something new and different. It’s exciting to see when people walk in and see how far we’ve come with it,” said Clark.
After purchasing the land in 2013, Clark has worked hard on building the bakery from scratch with all the features she hoped for in a business.
The dining room can seat 60 people inside and 30 outside. Clark plans to offer classes in candy and pastry making. There will be an observation area where customers can watch the bakers at work.
More Than Cake is truly more than just a bakery. It looks to be a sweet spot downtown for years to come.
