GEORGETOWN, KY – OCTOBER 23, 2017 – Shop small and celebrate your community with the small businesses that make it special – this is the mission of Small Business Saturday, a promotion launched by American Express in 2010 to encourage people across the country to support small, local businesses. With dozens and dozens of independently-owned shops and boutiques, galleries and restaurants – many located in its picturesque Victorian-era downtown, Georgetown makes it easy to support this annual shopping tradition, set for Saturday, Nov. 25, in 2017.

“Historic downtown Georgetown is a shopper’s delight, especially when approaching the holidays. All of our businesses light their storefronts up with cheerful decorations and offer some of the best deals around,” said Lori Saunders, executive director of Georgetown/Scott County Tourism. “No matter the season, our small businesses are what make our downtown so charming.”

Small shops, big shopping landscape
Georgetown’s small businesses have helped to create a thriving downtown district crowded with distinctive one-of-a-kind shops and boutiques: Georgetown Antique Mall; Heirlooms & Gretchen’s stained glass studio; Birdsong Quilting, Embroidery and Crafts; Adorabelles; Fine Art Editions Gallery & Press – featuring the works of world-famous equine photographer John Stephen Hockensmith – and so many more.

Shop Small and Small Business Saturday help to support local economies and promote vibrant, diverse communities. They are also part of a nationwide movement fueled by shoppers, business owners and organizers who come together and celebrate the community. Taking part in Small Business Saturday and shopping and dining at favorite local places throughout the year lets visitors show their support for small businesses and make a positive impact in the community.

Locally-owned Georgetown shops offer art, jewelry, scrapbooking supplies, home décor and accessories, candles, apparel, handcrafted gifts, designer handbags, toys and more. Locally-owned eateries serve unfussy home cooking, fine dining and everything in between. Several sweats shops cater to the sweet tooth with donuts, cupcakes, cookies and other confections.

Fancy a pint, a glass of wine or a finger or two of bourbon? All are available in Georgetown and locally owned. Visit award-winning Country Boy Brewing for a glass of its popular Cougar Bait, an American blonde ale. Try an Irish coffee at Slainte Public House. Sip small-batch bourbon at Bourbon 30.

Sightsee small
In addition to shopping small, visitors can “sightsee small” – Georgetown is pure small-town charm, especially during the holidays, and has a number of events planned for the Christmas season. Southern Lights Holiday Festival takes place Nov. 17-Dec. 31 at the Kentucky Horse Park. Home for the Holidays is planned for Dec. 2 and includes Georgetown’s annual Christmas tree lighting and parade, activities and open houses – the perfect time to start or finish holiday shopping.

Georgetown Community Theatre stages “Elf Jr. The Musical,” Dec. 1-3, at beautiful and historic Cardome Centre. The Actors Playhouse of Georgetown presents “The Life & Adventures of Santa Claus,” Dec. 8-10. Ward Hall Candlelight Tours show off one of the nation’s finest Greek Revival-style mansions, Dec. 8-10 and 15-20.
