Six Best Things To Do In Georgetown, Kentucky
Traveling With A Kentucky State Of Mind
Written by Dylan Marson
You never know how you’ll be feeling when you’re traveling somewhere new! Sometimes getting wrapped up in the excitement of travel can quickly sway your mood, for better or for worse. That’s why we’ve put together the six best ways to remedy any mood you encounter in Georgetown, Kentucky!
1. Melancholy
Sometimes you feel a little off and just can’t put a pin on why. There's no better way to improve a sour mood than with something sweet! (Nothing wrong with eating your feelings every now and then!) That’s why we’re making our next stop Chocomania in Downtown Georgetown, Kentucky
Opening their downtown location in 2023, this family-run sweets shop serves everything from the most trendy treats to custom baked cakes, and breakfast or lunch menus. Owner Christine Sawahla, her sisters & her mother will make sure you forget all about your problems and replace them with a little choco-mania.
2. Bored
First of all I don’t know how you can be bored in the heart of HORSE country, but we’ll just give you the benefit of the doubt on this one. It sounds like you need a little high adventure in your life so it’s time to saddle up and experience Kentucky in the most “Kentuckiest” way possible, on horseback!
Whether you’re an experienced rider or you’ve never ridden a horse in your life, Whispering Woods Riding Stable is the perfect place to ride horses while also surrounding yourself with natural beauty. Horses are expertly hand-picked for every individual as you prepare for your 60 or 90 minute guided trail ride.
Expect to be pushing off of trees, riding through creek beds and getting some on-the-fly horseback lessons to keep you on your toes. There won’t be a moment where you aren’t engaged and active as you explore Kentucky’s wildlife.
3. Anxious
Anxiety has become an issue more than ever. Constantly being assaulted by screens and flooded with information overload, it can be easy to get caught up in it all even while you’re trying to get away from everything with travel.
It’s time to slow things down and introduce yourself to one of Kentucky’s most effective stress relief activities…petting horses! Horses again?!? Yes.
These aren’t just any horses, mind you, at Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Farm you’ll come face-to-face with some of the most storied & successful thoroughbred racehorses in the world! Now retired and living the high-life, they spend their days doing only what they want to do; Visited by racing fans and horse-lovers year-round for some much-earned adoration.
Visitors may even get the chance to feed carrots straight out of their hand to the oldest living Kentucky Derby Winner (Silver Charm, 1997). This farm isn’t exclusive to the Champions either, some Old Friends residents have never won a race in their entire career! But every horse has a story to tell and deserves a place to simply be a horse, which is exactly what Old Friends is all about. By the end of this experience I don’t think you’ll even remember what had you anxious in the first place!
4. Hangry
This might be the most common affliction with the simplest solution, but when it comes to matters of the stomach, one should never settle! That’s why we’d like to introduce you to a little place called The Brown Barrel.
Located smack dab in the middle of Downtown Georgetown, this buzzing hotspot of Americana will take you on a trip through all your favorite classics and even some of Kentucky’s most iconic flavors.
Local Tip: Wanting to eat something that really represents Kentucky? Try a Hot Brown! Originating from the Brown Hotel in Louisville, this open faced sandwich is a cheesy wonderland for those who enjoy Southern Comfort Food, and will likely require a nap shortly after consumption.
Paired with the highly-praised Blind Harry’s Bar, the Brown Barrel truly lives up to its name with its top-notch selection of bourbon. If you prefer cocktails, try out a Manhattan, Old Fashioned or Mint Julep for best results.
5. Wanderlust
This one is for the road-trippers who just can’t seem to stay still. If you’ve got a desire to hit the roads, boy do we have the perfect roads for you! Joyride through some of Central Kentucky’s most iconic scenic routes; Winding through picturesque horse-country, passing by aged stone-fences and discovering unforgettable single-lane roads.
Local Tip: Wanting to catch the colors during the changing of the seasons? The end of October through the month of November marks the perfect time for leaf peepin’ adventures!
You can also get a look at some of Kentucky’s rural artistry on-the-go with the Buffalo Gals Barn Quilt Trail. Barn quilt squares are a cornucopia of traditional and contemporary artistry preserved on roadsides across the country! This trail gives your drive some purpose while you ride along country roads, past historic farms and alongside fields where cows and horses graze, corn ripples and wildflowers bloom.
Wanting to go even further? Check out all of the joyrides you can find across the entire Bluegrass Region!
