Babes BBQ Serves Up Pulled Pork With a Side of Prayer

There are two things hungry diners need to know about Babes BBQ.

First: Babes BBQ did not get its name from the famous sheepherding movie pig. It comes from manager Teresa Fraley’s breezy never-met-a-stranger manner of addressing customers; that is to say, she calls everyone “babe.”

Second: The family-owned and operated restaurant is the only place in town where you can get a good meal, a warm hug and a sincere prayer.

As one satisfied customer noted in her review: “The most incredible friendly service and amazing food!!! I will go back over and over! Family like atmosphere offer prayer love and comfort along with great food!”

“We are faith based,” said Teresa. “We know we wouldn’t be surviving right now without God.”

The pandemic has wreaked havoc on restaurants and retail across the country and Babes has been working through the continuous upheaval to meet customer expectations as best it can. Two ongoing issues the restaurant faces are food availability and fluctuating prices. 

“Because of circumstances related to the pandemic, not all items on the menu are available at all times and prices are subject to change,” said Teresa.

“I look forward to the day when all this is behind us, and we can get back on track and do what Babes is famous for – serving great barbecue.”

Owned by Frank West, Babes BBQ opened six years ago in Georgetown before moving to its current location – a cute little log cabin about five miles from downtown and within a four-minute drive of the Whispering Hills RV Park.

“We get a lot of people from Whispering Hills – thanks to the park referring campers to us,” said Teresa. “Everyone on a camping weekend always says they’re going to put us on their next trip.”

The kid-friendly restaurant offers dine-in, including patio seating, and carry out. The house specialty is, of course, Babes’ pulled pork. It shows up in a variety of menu items, including sandwiches, dinners, quesadillas, burritos and more.

“Don’t be surprised at what you’ll find we can do with pulled pork,” said Teresa.

Among Babes’ most popular items are its Rib Sammich, featuring rib meat pulled off the bones and covered in a sweet sauce and pickles and onions and served on a grilled hoagie bun, and Redneck Nachos, a piquant mélange of homemade seasoned potato chips, pulled pork, queso and sour cream.

Dine in or pick up – but come early! Babes has a devoted fan following who are not at all shy about showing their love on the diner’s Facebook page:

Hours: 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday; 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. NOTE: Saturdays at Babes are known to frequently sell out. Closed Sunday through Tuesday. Catering is available, for pickup or drop-off.

RECIPE

Babes BBQ’s Pecan Cobbler

Babes’ manager Teresa Fraley says this sugary-sweet dessert may be found in the pie case pretty much all the time. 

“The cakey crust comes to the top and the filling is buttery ooey-gooey pecan,” she says.

We say, “Mmm!”

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups self-rising flour

1 cup white sugar

1 3/4 cups boiling water

3/4 cup pecans

3 TBS melted butter

1 1/2 cups brown sugar

1 cup milk

Instructions

Put melted butter and pecans in the bottom of a 9 x 13 baking pan. In a bowl, mix flour, white sugar and milk. Pour this mixture over butter and pecans. Sprinkle 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar over the batter. DO NOT STIR! On top of this, pour 1 3/4 cup boiling water. DO NOT STIR! Put in 350-degree oven and bake for about 30 minutes until golden brown. Top it with ice cream or whipped topping if desired.
