Marking the contributions women have made to the United States began over 40 years ago in 1981 as a national celebration that has evolved from a week to an entire month. Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as “Women’s History Month.” It also recognizes specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields.
From icon Sallie Ward and Mrs. Sarah “Sadie” Emison Pack to Dr. Alicestyne Turley, Georgetown has a long history of strong, independent-minded and entrepreneurially spirited women. And history keeps repeating itself, with today’s Women of Scott County contributing their own stories and successes—and making Scott County all the richer for them.
To celebrate Women’s History Month, Georgetown/Scott County Tourism is featuring one local woman a day through March in its “Women of Scott County” series. We are pleased to introduce you to these amazingly wonderful women that make up our community.

Stephanie Holbrook
Owner of The Hidden Trove
Meet Stephanie Holbrook...
The woman who most inspired you is:
The woman who has most inspired me is my mother! Mom married young, raised three daughters and taught us all that we could do whatever we wanted to in life! Mom decided to go back to work in the late 70's running a Hallmark store! My first job, I was 8/9 years old, was dusting her shelves in the shop and she paid me in Hello Kitty merchandise! Mom made sure that I knew to show up early, work hard, be kind to everyone and stand up for yourself! To this day, I am proud of everything she taught me!
Favorite quote that guides you in your life and work:
I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. - Thomas Edison
What piece of advice has helped you succeed?
A piece of advise that has always stuck with me is that even if you try something new and it doesn't pan out the way you had hoped or even if it appears to have failed, it is a life experience and you've grown in wisdom on that subject! Just keep on keeping on, no tasks is beneath you, stay humble and carry on! Success comes through adversity!
What piece of advice did you ignore?
Any advise that didn't seem to have my best interests in mind I took with a grain of salt. Someone may be telling me what I want to hear, not necessarily what I need to hear. Only take advise from those that really know me.
Favorite Georgetown activity/attraction during your downtime:
I love our shops and restaurants downtown! Poking around in the antique mall or peddlers mall, taking a stroll for some ice cream!
Your message to young women:
Never be intimidated by someone with more experience or think that just because you are young you don't have much to offer! If you have a passion for something, ideas in your head, find an outlet for your talents! Seek out other women that support your ideas and if you want advise ask for it, but don't be afraid to try something new!
Stephanie Holbrook's Major Achievements:
My biggest blessing has been the relationships/friendships I have acquired since opening almost 5 years ago! When someone walks in and says they love this shop, or they love the things I carry, that to me is my personal goal and to hear that they appreciate my love for what I do is the best accolade I could receive!

Melissa Mattox
Owner of Miss Behaven | Downtown Georgetown
Meet Melissa Mattox...
The woman who most inspired you is:
I can't pick just one woman inspired me the most. Any woman who works hard, loves her family, and supports her friends inspires me. I am surrounded by a community of strong women and every one of them adds such value to the lives of so many others. I feel the most successful women are those who help others to succeed. We are much stronger in a cords of multiple strands than in a single strand alone. As I've grown older, I have realized the value of a diverse group of females as friends.
Favorite quote that guides you in your life and work:
"I didn't get it all done in one day either- God." In my early years as a small business owner I thought being "caught up" was a real thing, and it was my goal. It was not unusual for me to work late 5 out of 7 nights a week trying to reach this imaginary place of being "caught up". I've learned that no matter what you finish in a days time, there is a whole new set of tasks waiting the next day. I'm learning that I don't have to get it all done today and that feel's very good!
What piece of advice has helped you succeed?
Getting up early to reflect, plan and focus on the upcoming days direction. Psalm 143:8 says "Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. I like to wake up early seek God's guidance in both the big and little decisions to be made each day. I find that when I seek God's guidance for decisions to be made regarding my business or my personal life, things just go better.
What piece of advice did you ignore?
People frequently give me advice. I can't recall any that I've simply ignored. I am willing to consider anything, but in the end, try to make the best choices for me and my family, my staff and my business.
Favorite Georgetown activity/attraction during your downtime:
My husband and I love to have dinner at our local owned eateries. Georgetown has an abundance of fantastic places to eat! I am a believer in supporting other small businesses and what a treat it is to partake and enjoy all that the local places have to offer! Often during the workday I arrange to meet with vendors or friends in a neighboring bakery or restaurant, to share the treasures of local places while also supporting other small businesses. That's very important you know!
Your message to young women:
Don't wait until you have it all together to do all the things. If there is something you want to do, make a plan, pray about it and if God says yes, then do it! So what if there's laundry on the couch.. invite your friend or neighbor in anyway. Life is short and if you wait until you have it all together, it may never happen. Don't miss out on the little joys because things aren't just perfect. I was 50 when we opened Miss Behaven... I should have done it when I was 30!

Ms. Bobbi Craig
Owner of Fabled Forest
Meet Bobbi Craig...
The woman who most inspired you is:
My grandmother, Glenda Sue Jones, affectionately known as Ninnie, has been my greatest inspiration. She selflessly took on the role of raising me, displaying remarkable resilience, compassion, and unwavering kindness despite countless obstacles. The memory of her strength, diligence, warm smile, and infectious laughter in the toughest of times serve as a perpetual source of inspiration and motivation.
Favorite quote that guides you in your life and work:
"Believe you can and you're halfway there." - Theodore Roosevelt. This quote reminds me of the power of self-belief and the importance of having confidence in one's abilities. It serves as a constant reminder to push through obstacles and pursue my goals with hard work and determination.
What piece of advice has helped you succeed?
Be true to yourself. Sounds easy, but I struggled with anxiety and insecurities in my youth, often feeling inadequate. I've always believed that our differences are our greatest strengths, but it took time for me to trust in my own abilities and stop seeking validation from others. Believing in myself ultimately unlocked the door to all my successes. Instead of conforming to societal norms, I embraced my uniqueness, using it to spark creativity, drive innovation, and forge genuine connections.
What piece of advice did you ignore?
The advice I chose to disregard was to play it safe. Through experience, I've come to understand that significant opportunities for personal development and achievement often arise when we venture beyond our comfort zones and embrace uncertainty. Rather than waiting for the perfect moment in the future, I take proactive steps towards my goals in the present. When I want something, I immediately begin taking action to pursue it.
Favorite Georgetown activity/attraction during your downtime:
love digging through the booths at the Antique Mall, I’ve been treasure hunting there since I was a kid and have never failed to find something new to me that carries history and a story of its own with it. (I can also find one of my dearest friends there, so the conversation is always interesting!) I love supporting the local arts, so I am often found creating at Colorspell, enjoying music at Chinkapin or Slainte, or walking through the creek or woods foraging for items to use in my art.
Your message to young women:
Embrace your individuality and recognize the immense influence your voice holds. Your value isn't determined by external approval or societal norms, but by the love, empathy, and generosity you show to yourself and those around you. Trust in your abilities, pursue your passions relentlessly, and never be afraid to dream big. Be brave.
Bobbi's Major Achievements
In my extensive career in HR leadership, spanning Virginia Tech, Coca-Cola, Visual Edge IT, and Davis H Elliot, I've earned my SHRM-CP (Society for Human Resource Management Certified Professional) and SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources). Outside HR, I've also opened a nature-themed bookstore. My journey reflects a dedication to empowering individuals, nurturing positive atmospheres, and pursuing ventures that resonate with my values and passions.

Ms. Willow Hambrick
Georgetown City Council Member
Meet Willow Hambrick...
The woman who most inspired you is:
Ruth Bader Ginsburg inspires me. Despite being 1stin her graduating class from Columbia Law School, the only job offer she received was as a secretary – because she was a woman, Jewish, and a mother. She overcame ongoing discrimination to become the second woman appointed to the Supreme Court at age 60, and she championed pay equity, women’s rights, minority rights, gay rights, and rights for other marginalized and poor people. Her transformative legacy lives on.
Favorite quote that guides you in your life and work
“To whom much is given, much is required.” I am committed to social activism and service to others because I have the privilege, the means, and the time to advocate for others. Emma Lazarus said: “Until we are all free, we are none of us free.” Therefore, we must help those “huddled masses yearning to breathe free” so they have the opportunity to prosper with a sense of purpose, joy, and justice.
What piece of advice has helped you succeed?
A wise educator told me: “Do not immerse yourself in senseless, trivial pursuits or gossip. Seek out the best truths from reliable journalism, from insightful literature and speeches, and from people steeped in integrity and compassion.” I internalized that advice. I also learned from the play, “Our Town” to strive to emulate “the saints and poets” in our midst.
What piece of advice did you ignore?
A guidance counselor told me to attend a large in-state university since I had zero means to afford college. I ignored that advice to attend Hanover, a small liberal arts college that better suited my aspirations and personality. I was scholar-enough to be awarded scholarships, I worked 7 years at Dairy Queens, and I washed lunch and supper dishes at a campus sorority house to realize my vocational dream to become a teacher. I am thankful my determination overcame my challenges.
Favorite Georgetown activity/attraction during your downtime:
I like to wander the picturesque streets of downtown Georgetown and Georgetown College and visit local shops and restaurants. Taking time to walk and reflect allows me to count my blessings. The people and ambiance of Georgetown and Scott County have much to offer the mind, heart, and spirit.
Willows message to young women:
Never submit to the expectations of mindless tradition or tentacles of oppression – especially if your innate calling is bound and chained.Seek out mentors who will allow you to “find that place where your own deep gladness meets the world’s deep hunger.” (Frederick Buechner) And, remember: “We rise by lifting others.” (Robert Ingersoll)

Just keep swimming. When a wave of life knocks you under... find the surface and tread water...just keep swimming!
What piece of advice did you ignore?
What people think of you matters.
It doesn't.
Favorite Georgetown activity/attraction during your downtime:
I am usually at a court or ballfield cheering my youngest two children on, if not there you can find me at home where I run Maggie's Light LLC. A nonprofit I founded that serve families that endure pregnancy and infant loss.
Your message to young women:

Ms. Michele Carlisle
Executive Director - Amen House
Meet Michele Carlisle...
The woman who most inspired you is:
Ms. Lana Jackson, aka, Ms. J. She was my yearbook advisor in high school and made the most profound impression on me. Every year she spoke about the students who filled the pages of the yearbook and challenged all of us to do more than take up space in life.
Favorite quote that guides you in your life and work:
People who really want to make a difference in the world usually do it, in one way or another. And I've noticed something about people who make a difference in the world: They hold the unshakable conviction that individuals are extremely important, that every life matters. They get excited over one smile. They are willing to feed one stomach, educate one mind, and treat one wound. They aren't determined to revolutionize the world all at once; they're satisfied with small changes.
What piece of advice has helped you succeed?
Over time, though, the small changes add up. Sometimes they even transform cities and nations, and yes the world. --Beth Clark
Focus on yourself, don't spend time comparing your efforts to others doing the same work.
What piece of advice did you ignore?
There were some well meaning individuals along the way that thought if we fed everyone in Scott County who needed food, not just those living in absolute poverty, the AMEN House could not sustain the load.
Favorite Georgetown activity/attraction during your downtime:
We love live music, so it's awesome that Slainte and Chinkapin are in our downtown.
Your message to young women:
The world should be a better place because you are in it. Trust your calling and lean into it. If you are destined to make an impact with your life, many will tell you it's not possible. It's ok to allow them to simply sit and watch, but don't let them slow your down.

Ms. Resa Browning
Owner | Seeds & Saplings | Downtown Georgetown
Meet Resa Browning...
The woman who most inspired you is:
It may sound trivial, but truly all women inspire me. Take the time to really watch a woman you know - their level of care and concern combined with work ethic, how they develop and nuture relationships while multi-tasking and problem-solving simultaneously...women are amazing!
Favorite quote that guides you in your life and work:
"Have a good day every day." Get in the habit of choosing to make today what you want it to be and finding joy in simple tasks.
What piece of advice has helped you succeed?
"If not now, then when?" If you can add it for today's to do list, do so. If not, when can it be on a task list...tomorrow, next week, in three months or next year? This makes small bites out of big tasks and helps you reach goals without even realizing it.
What piece of advice did you ignore?
I was told early in my career that small, retail businesses don't make it and discouraged from following this path. I love that our strong community of independent merchants are proving that person wrong every single day!
Favorite Georgetown activity/attraction during your downtime:
Living and working in downtown Georgetown, I often refer to it as our own version of Mayberry! I love to walk the streets early in the morning and watch downtown come to life. It is a great way to clear my mind and re-instills the pride I have for our sweet community.
Your message to young women:
No matter how big or small it may seem, find your dream and make it happen. Build relationships that will be a solid foundation and make your own joy. That joy will be contagious to those around you and you will then be making the world a better place one day at a time, just by being you.en.

Ms. Jaclyn Ruble
Owner of Pilates On Main | Downtown Georgetown
Meet Jaclyn Ruble...
The woman who most inspired you is:
My Mother. She is the epitome of a strong, giving, supportive Mother who leads by example.
She had me at a young age, received no assistance from anyone, raised me with strong values of integrity - honesty - kindness - compassion & a never give up or give in approach to life.
There aren’t enough characters in this tiny box to adequately describe my Mother so I’ll simply say how I feel. I am the luckiest girl on earth to call her mine.
Favorite quote that guides you in your life and work:
My mind & life mantras are guided by so many quotes; choosing only one is impossible. I'll share two that are inextricably linked, for me, & hope that's ok.
The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.- CoCo Chanel
Our body's ability to heal is greater than we've been led to believe.- Unknown
Every aspect of my life & work embodies these two quotes and I pray daily that I am instilling the same into everyone I meet and work with.
What piece of advice has helped you succeed?
These are tough questions, as I've been blessed with so many important pieces of wisdom & guidance in my years.
That being said, one I turn to daily is, Remember your WHY. Why you started, why your heart lights up when you help another, WHY God planted this passion in your heart.
This simple phrase carries me through the toughest of days. Remember your WHY.
What piece of advice did you ignore?
I cannot recall a piece of advice that I've ignored. I believe everyone is a messenger of God, and that we have something to learn from all.
Maybe I've been fortunate to be surrounded by great humans with optimistic and uplifting words or maybe I have a discerning ear that filters out unhelpful or negative advice.
Ultimately, I carry pieces of advice from everyone with me; whether consciously or unconsciously given.
Favorite Georgetown activity/attraction during your downtime:
Definitely strolling the streets of downtown: enjoying a tasty treat at Rebecca's, perusing the shoppes, chatting with strangers - feeling like I've stepped back in time in all the best ways. Small town simplicity at its best!!!
Your message to young women:
Take your time, with everything.
Learn how to truly love and take great care of yourself FIRST - always. .
I know it's hard to not compare yourself to those you admire, but don't or when you do, remember God made YOU. Perfectly Imperfect you & you are wonderful just as you are. Be YOU!
Figure out what sets your soul on fire & do that. Pray & God will provide a way.
Lead with kindness, compassion, empathy, & love. You may get hurt sometimes but in the end, that's our legacy. Our hearts.

Favorite quote that guides you in your life and work:
"I've come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you." —Oprah Winfrey
What piece of advice has helped you succeed?
Never take advice from someone who isn't where you want to be & if you are the smartest in the room, you are in the wrong room.
What piece of advice did you ignore?
“Don’t do it”
Possibly the most heart-crushing, tear-jerking thing anyone has ever said to me was, ‘Don’t pursue your passion.’ Not many people can make a living off their creative passions, but I proved them wrong by working hard and never letting other people’s opinions affect my life.
Favorite Georgetown activity/attraction during your downtime:
Running at the Legacy Trail
Your message to young women:
Take it one small step at a time
Every great journey begins with a single step. If one thing doesn’t work, you have to keep trying. It’s never about immediate mastery; it’s about persistence. One task at a time, one challenge after another. The important thing is to start. Before you know it, the leaps you’ve made are astounding.

Do anything in your power to get ahead. To me, being successful is helping those around me to succeed. If they aren't thriving then I don't feel like I have done my part to help.
Favorite Georgetown activity/attraction during your downtime:
Visiting all of the wonderful, quaint shops along Main Street.
Your message to young women:
Celebrate your uniqueness and don't compare yourself to anyone. Be only in competition with yourself and focus on whatever brings you joy and fulfillment.
Lauren's Accolades & Major Achievements:
I have received Gold ADDY awards through the years, but far more important to me has been to see my clients thrive and know that I had, in some respects, a part in their achievements. I have been very fortunate to have had the chance to work with so many amazing people along the way.

The woman who most inspired you is:
Personally, my mother. Professionally, Linda Rains. When I met Linda, I knew I had met someone that truly wanted to invest in me and help me become the best leader I could be. I am forever grateful for her guidance, her kindness, and her honesty.
Favorite quite that guides you in your life and work:
It is what it is, but it will become what you make it.
What piece of advice has helped you succeed?
In April of 2016, my mom told me I needed to, "Turn off the noise." Sometimes, it's really good to quit listening to everyone and resonate in your own silence to help you find your center. When you are centered, you find clarity in decision-making.
What piece of advice did you ignore?
I ignored plenty of advice from my parents when I was younger! I wish I had listened instead of being such a knucklehead!
Favorite Georgetown activity/attraction during your downtime:
I certainly love attending GCHS events! I enjoyy dinner at Local Feed, shopping downtown, and spending time with family!
Your message to young women:
Don't ever sell yourself short. What you believe is impossible is truly possible--you just have to find a way to make the impossible a reality. As well, if you don't have the answer, advocate for yourself and ask for help.

Favorite quote that guides you in your life and work:
I'm not big on quotes but this scripture means a lot to me: "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11
What piece of advice has helped you succeed?
Meet people where they are, not where you think they should be.
What piece of advice did you ignore?
Almost all of it! No seriously, there are so many opinions and well meaning advice out there about what you shoudl do with your life, or how to run a business and a lot of it's just noise.
Favorite Georgetown activity/attraction during your downtime:
The downtown Spooktacular! I love seeing all the children's costumes and smiles!
Your message to young women:
Choose your company wisely. If you want to be successful, surround yourself with successful individuals, and never become un-teachable. Oh, and find an older female mentor

Amanda Stiltner
Owner of Colorspell Creative Studio
Meet Amanda Stiltner..
The woman who most inspired you is:
I have a painting in my current show, "Brimstone & Velvet" at Mill and Max gallery in Lexington called "Momma Dug Us Out." It was inspired by my mom, who was a young, single mom working as a nurse aide at a nursing home when we were kids. The city wouldn't clear the street in front of our house because the road was treacherous in the winter so this little, 4'11" woman would get up at 4:30am to dig the whole street out so she could get to work. I don't think anybody on the street knew it was her.
Favorite quote that guides you in your life and work:
"Rejection is protection." I think as a woman navigating creative entrepreneurship and motherhood simultaneously, I've learned that opportunities that fall through weren't right for me in the long run. I try to stay curious when a door closes now.
What piece of advice has helped you succeed?
To aim for thriving rather than what we typically define as success. I work in such a way that I can have a second cup of lingering coffee, gathering opportunities around a big table and time to get bored. The juicy, creative energy needs time for boredom and that's scarce these days when there's always something to keep us busy.
What piece of advice did you ignore?
I don't love traditional advice about quitting. I think we owe it to ourselves to self-edit and shift when osmething isn't working for us.
Favorite Georgetown activity/attraction during your downtime:
Slowly wandering and browsing the shelves at Fabled Forest, grabbing chocolate chip cookie dough in a waffle cone at Hoggy's or painting on the banks of the Elkhorn.
Your message to young women:
You're your own guru, your own muse and you're own medicine. Trust the unfolding.

Melinda Bredwood
Owner of Lola's Laundry
Meet Melinda Bredwood...
The woman who most inspired you is:
I've been fortunate to be surrounded by many wonderful women that have inspired me, starting with my mother Nellie Mae Smith, a hardworking, Christian woman who made countless sacrifices for her family. I'm thankful for all the women that have loved, encouraged and corrected me. I am fortunate to be surrounded by younger women like my nieces and my daughter, Lydia Marie, who walk in their conviction and authenticity. As a business owner Shannon Fitzgerald inspires me to dream big.
What piece of advice has helped you succeed?
Seek God's will for your life. Pay close attention to those things that bring you joy and those things that fuel your passion. Have a heart to serve others and always remember champions keep playing until they get it right.
What piece of advice did you ignore?
I am always willing to listen to any advice that someone gives me. I take the advice and weigh it against truth. During my first professional job, I was denied moving into the accounting department, because the manager didn't deem my university good enough. I used that comment as a motivation to find another job.
Favorite Georgetown activity/attraction during your downtime:
I enjoy walking in the Scott County Park and watching basketball games at Scott County High School and at Great Crossing High School. I also enjoy spending time at Lola's Laundry meeting, talking and serving our diverse customer base.
Your message to young women:
For female entrepreneurs, I advice you to pray and plan. Do your research and monitor your passion. Always know your "WHY". Determine what is going to get you out of bed in the morning. Stick to your business propositions and recognize you can't be everything to everybody. Calculate the risk, and remember even when you fall, you fall forward, because you have made a step closer to success. Seek advice from others and find a way to pour back into other women.
