Historic Walking Tour
Town founder Elijah Craig set about laying out the first block of lots of the city of Georgetown in 1786—three years before making his historic discovery of the bourbon distillation process at Royal Spring. We like to think that Elijah would be proud of how his original vision—to create a bustling hive of industry and education—evolved into a downtown with pristine, lamppost-lined Victorian streetscapes, 200 National Historic Register buildings, baskets of flowers splashing color throughout and a park (where said discovery took place) that still inspires those who visit.
See Royal Spring Park and other landmarks on Georgetown’s Historic Downtown Walking Tour. A “Walk Through Time” is a step-by-step guide to all the historically preserved buildings along Main Street and corresponding side streets. From the Historic Scott County Jail and the “Castles” to historic churches and Georgetown College, each stop reflects the type of outstanding residential and commercial architecture Elijah dreamed about and for which the city is known.
This self-guided walking tour is available at the Georgetown/Scott County Tourist Office and Visitor Center and the Chamber of Commerce.
