Ward Hall
The epitome of Southern architectural grandeur, this 12,000-square-foot villa with 27-foot-high fluted Corinthian columns and gorgeous double elliptical staircase was once home to cheeky fashionista Sallie Ward. Sallie was the niece of Junius Ward, who built the Greek Revival manse in 1856 for $50,000 in gold—that’s more than $2 million in today’s dollars.
And (as her astonished mother-in-law can attest), Sallie loved nothing better than scandalizing polite society—even if it meant stripping down to her birthday suit before a bevy of bluebloods. Still, both Queen Victoria of Great Britain and the Empress Eugenie of France demanded to meet her.
Hear Sallie’s story on Ward Hall’s Open House guided tours. During the holidays, the house is set aglow with candlelight and trimmed from attic to basement with multiple trees, fragrant live greenery and stockings—hung by the chimney and from chairs in the Victorian tradition—for evening Candlelight Tours.
