Yuko-En on the Elkhorn
Step through the Tokugawa gate of Yuko-en on the Elkhorn, the Official Kentucky-Japan Friendship Garden, 
and enter a world of color, fragrance, graceful sculptural elements and serenity. With waterfalls and chirping birds adding a soothing soundtrack, the overall ambience of this four-season Japanese-style strolling garden inspires calm and quiet reflection.
Named for the literal meaning of the words, “yuko-en” (friendship garden), the garden design gently guides visitors along paths of native cane to bridges and a koi pond. Lanterns, including the Kotoji lantern, grace the landscape. A Maho-An Tea House provides a quiet resting place. Another house, the Raku, holds a kiln—the only working kiln within a Japanese-style garden in or out of Japan—and signifies the blending of two cultures. Open daily from dawn to dusk, the 5 1/2-acre garden is free to the public.
